Agarospirol

Agarospirol, C15H26O, CAS 1460-73-7, is the sesquiterpene alcohol the house’s oud essay names as its key molecule. Its identity is PubChem’s.

A study of its biosynthesis calls it one of agarwood’s characteristic compounds, with a spicy, peppery, woody note; it was first isolated from the essential oil of Aquilaria malaccensis.

PubChem’s computed 3D conformer of agarospirol (CID 21675005, conformer 014ABBFD00000002): the shape a computer model gives the molecule, not an experimental structure and not a picture of a real molecule. Ball and stick: 15 carbon, 1 oxygen; the 26 hydrogen atoms are left out for clarity. The balls are drawn smaller than the atoms’ real reach; a double bond is two sticks, side by side.
