Rosa damascena Mill.

The damask rose, Rosa damascena Mill., is the perfumer’s rose. Its flowers are picked with the sepals, in the early morning, for a few weeks each spring; from them come rose otto by distillation and rose absolute by solvent extraction.

Two of its places are on record here: the Valley of Roses around Kazanlak in Bulgaria, whose rose oil is a protected name, and Taif in Saudi Arabia, where the picking season begins at the end of March. The family, the cultivars and the other growing regions are not filed until a source is.

A red rose

A 3D model of a garden red rose by Lassi Kaukonen (CC BY 4.0), not a botanical specimen of Rosa × damascena; simplified and scaled to about life size here.

To place it in your room, open this page on an iPhone or iPad (AR Quick Look) or an Android phone (Google Scene Viewer). The files below open in any 3D viewer.

A single red rose on its stem, a 3D model by Lassi Kaukonen ("Red rose", CC BY 4.0) - the same model the site’s rose renders use. It is a garden rose, not a specimen of the Damask rose (Rosa × damascena) grown for rose oil; it shows the flower whose petals are distilled for rose otto and extracted for rose absolute. Simplified for the web and scaled to about life size (45 cm): the size is a choice, not a measurement.
