α-santalol

α-Santalol, C15H24O, is the sesquiterpene alcohol the house’s sandalwood essay names as the oil’s principal molecule. Its identity is PubChem’s.

A study of the oil’s biosynthesis names it, with β-santalol, as the most important contributor to the scent of sandalwood oil. No share is given: the study’s figure is for four molecules together.

PubChem’s computed 3D conformer of α-santalol (CID 11085337, conformer 00A9261900000001): the shape a computer model gives the molecule, not an experimental structure and not a picture of a real molecule. Ball and stick: 15 carbon, 1 oxygen; the 24 hydrogen atoms are left out for clarity. The balls are drawn smaller than the atoms’ real reach; a double bond is two sticks, side by side.
