Haiti

Haiti is one of the leading sources of vetiver oil on record; a review calls it “the world’s first exporter”, with much of the oil coming from the Les Cayes commune.

Many families live directly from the crop. No harvest season is given. The point on the globe is Wikidata’s point for the country, not a field.

The record

Each field carries its evidence: open a chip for the source, the quoted words and the confidence. A field with nothing behind it says so and stays empty.

Despite a price of 350–500 $/kg, its worldwide consumption is estimated at 300–400 t/year, of which 60 % comes from the Les Cayes commune of Haiti.

    • softened · Haiti is one of the leading producers of vetiver oil, and the crop supports a great many small farmers. With about two hundred compounds on record, vetiver is a chemically complex natural material. Khusimol is among its most abundant alcohols, but the smell itself has been traced to a trace ketone, and the full orchestra creates the unmistakable character.
